Welcome to Thirsk
Thirsk is a wonderful traditional North Yorkshire market town in the Vale of York and best known as the home to the author James Herriot. His house and surgery has now been converted into the 'World of James Herriot' which is an award winning Museum and Visitor Attraction.
James Herriot is not Thirsk's only famous son. Thomas Lord the founder of Lord Cricket ground was also born in Thirsk in 1755. His birth place is now Thirsk Museum.
Thirsk is a typical North Yorkshire market town with a cobbled market square. The town clock dominates the market square and many shops retain their original frontages.
Thirsk Market days are Mondays and Saturdays when the south side of the Market Place has a variety of stalls selling everything from fruit and vegetables, candles, computer games to health food, clothing. On most bank holiday Mondays the whole market place is almost filled by stalls and can be very busy.
The Cod Beck River flows through the town and there are lots of ducks to feed by the water's edge. The racecourse holds several race meetings each year.
Sowerby adjoins Thirsk to the south. It has many unspoiled buildings, tucked away from the main route through Thirsk.
